The elements will be considered by group after an introductory section that reviews several concepts that help to make sense of periodic trends in the descriptive chemistry of these elements. Point at or click an element from the periodic table for more information. Cobalt stays magnetic to the highest temperature of all the magnetic elements (it has a Curie point of 1121 o C). Cobalt is usually recovered as a byproduct of mining and refining nickel, silver, lead. The metal is active chemically, forming many compounds. Cobalts primary ores are cobaltite (CoAsS) and erythrite (Co3(AsO4)2). Boron can transmit part of infrared light. Characteristics: Cobalt is a bluish-white, lustrous, hard, brittle metal. It can be used to produce green fire and is added as a common colorant in fireworks. Chlorine atoms bridge Al centers in aluminum chloride dimer at left while the structure of pentaborane nonahydride shown at right includes four B-H-B bridge bonds arranged around the open face of a cluster of five B atoms held together by cluster bonds. Element atomic number 5 burns with a green flame.
